Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) are state run oversight bodies with general jurisdiction over regulated utilities.  Although the regulatory scope and ability of PUCs varies slightly from state to state, generally they oversee electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, and sewer utilities.  They work to ensure that customers of these regulated utilities receive safe, adequate, and reliable service at just and reasonable rates.

Take a few moments to write to your public utility commission and make it known that you oppose mountaintop removal mining, and that you want your energy to come from cleaner, renewable sources! You will join the %adv-participants-letter_puc1% people who have already raised this issue with their local utility commissions.

Your email will be more effective if you can personalize it -- why is stopping mountaintop removal mining important to you?

Subject: Mountaintop removal mining is destructive

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As an electricity user, I am concerned about the destruction being wrought all over the Appalachian Mountains due to mountaintop removal coal mining. Our country is at a precipice where we must start to recognize environmental problems like mountaintop removal mining and global warming are destroying our environment, our land, and our culture. As a responsible energy provider, I implore you to pursue alternative, renewable forms of energy that will allow us to thrive as a nation but also preserve clean air, clean water, and a clean environment for future generations.

Sincerely,
