The Bush administration is planning to roll back a key part of the Clean Air Act designed to protect our communities from excess pollution from industrial facilities. If they succeed in gutting this program, Americans will be subjected to thousands of extra pounds of pollution in the air they breathe. New Source Review is the Clean Air Act program that requires thousands of the dirtiest and oldest industrial facilities, including oil refineries and power plants, to reduce their emissions. The pollutants emitted by these facilities include carcinogens like dioxin and benzene and respiratory irritants like sulfur dioxide. These toxic pollutants lead to a number of health problems, including asthma and premature death. This program, updated and strengthened in 1977 and 1990, is now called New Source Review. NSR requires new facilities as well as existing facilities making major modifications that result in significant pollution increases to install modern pollution control equipment. This program is crucial for preventing further deterioration of air quality. Don't let the administration play political games with your family's health. Tell President Bush today that you oppose any rollbacks to the Clean Air Act. |
