Mountaintop removal coal mining is destroying Appalachia. Already, more than 1,200 miles of streams, rivers and headwaters have been permanently buried. Over 400,000 acres of mountains have been destroyed. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that by the end of this decade, 2,200 square miles of West Virginia mountains will be blown apart.

The Army Corps of Engineers, in its oversight of mountaintop removal mining permits, has a responsibility to end this destruction, follow the law and protect the land and people of Appalachia.

There are people in these areas who have lived there for generations and are being strong armed by a practice that is the worst type of coal mining. The locals call it "strip mining on steroids," and they have lost homes and property that have been in their families for generations.

Mountaintop removal mining is destroying a region that was monumental in the development of our nation. The history and culture of the Appalachians is a part of American history, and preserving these mountains, valleys and streams is the first step towards guaranteeing this history will be available for all generations to appreciate.
