The short explanation of this alert was:

Next week, the Senate will debate its version of the energy bill. As currently written, the bill relies on the outdated, discredited approach of drilling for oil, burning coal, and subsidizing expensive and dangerous nuclear power. We need a new energy direction that promotes renewable energy and efficiency, addresses global warming, protects consumers and taxpayers, enhances our energy and national security by reducing our dependence on oil, and safeguards America’s natural resource heritage.

We need your help. Big oil and coal and other polluters will fight to introduce amendments containing many of the anti-environmental provisions found in the House bill into the Senate version. We cannot allow the Senate to further weaken clean air and water protections, nor can we let it promote reckless development in our wild places in the Rocky Mountains, Alaska, and our coasts.

Please ask your senators to vote against any anti-environmental amendments to the energy bill and support efforts to promote a new far-sighted energy policy that actually addresses America’s energy needs in a responsible way. Act now!
