Global Warming and Extinction: Write Your Newspapers!

Polar bear with her cubs You've probably heard that polar bears are seriously threatened by rising temperatures and melting ice. But you may not know that global warming is becoming a leading cause of extinction all over the world.

The United Nations recently estimated that almost a third of ALL animal and plant species could be at an increased risk of extinction, with up to 60 percent species loss in some regions.

It's time to stand up and help species that are in trouble due to global warming: like corals dying from rising sea temperatures, amphibians facing new diseases, and grizzly bears losing their food sources. Learn about more species in trouble. (PDF)

Spread the word: Write a letter today!

Sending a letter to the editor of your local paper is a great way to spread the word about this growing threat to wildlife. Our new feature gives you a simple and effective way to write and submit your letter. Just follow the steps below, and please let us know if you see it in print!

This is a chance for you to get personal -- let editors know why this issue is so important to you, and why others in your region should care. Here are some hints on how to make your letter compelling:

  • If possible, refer to something mentioned in the paper recently (include the date and title)
  • Keep it short, polite, and to the point (under 150 words is best)
  • Proofread your letter carefully
  • Don't be discouraged if your letter isn't published. Even unpublished letters can encourage a paper to pay more attention to the issue. Every effort counts!
